Good Evening Dear Brothers and Sisters:
We welcome you all to our end of year party; we are grateful to you all for making it possible to come out tonight to all celebrate yourselves and also celebrate with us. Thanks to our guests for attending our party; and also a special thanks to the planning committee for their hard work towards organizing this party.
For those of you who don’t know; CGCOC is a well-known enterprise rooted overseas for a very long time. It first came into Nigeria in 1983 in the way of foreign aids with borehole drilling as its first business in the country. Over time the company diversified into four other business areas namely; consulting planning, investment operations, overseas infrastructure construction, logistics and trade. Also the manpower of the company increased from a team of 10 persons into nearly 25,000 employees of which 90 percent of these employees are from our host countries; working hard on a wide range of activities in different parts of the world. In Nigeria alone we have over 5,000 employees.
Furthermore, our Nigerian branch; CGC Nigeria Limited has experienced phenomenal growth in Nigeria with the help of adhering to our business philosophy of; “Cooperation Breeds Wealth, Innovation Leads Progress”, based on this our company has completed a lot of big projects with high standards of engineering quality, such as ONEX (Abuja Outer North Ring Expressway Project), Ogoja water supply project, Obubra water supply project, Nigeria Country Office of Africa Development Bank, Dutse International Airport and so on. And all these achievements were only made possible due to the company’s flexible system and talent team advantage, which is a term I use to describe you all of you seated here.
However, in addition to these achievements, our talents working on the company’s Road and Bridge projects have successfully completed 478 projects in the past decades and completion mileage reached 3500KM. Our talents working on our water supply projects have completed over 100 water projects in Nigeria and the Pipeline network laying 1,328,000 meters (One million three hundred and twenty eight thousand meters), which supplies 1,284,000,000 (One billion two hundred and eighty four million litre) of water to local residents every day. Also the finished dam & irrigation projects can irrigate 23,000 hectare farm land. Our Agricultural wing have become one of the biggest seed suppliers in Nigeria; we have provided Nigeria with over 20,000 tons of high-quality seeds and contributed more than 1 million tons to Nigeria's rice production increase. In addition, we have also achieved a lot in other areas as well, such as drilling, building construction, international trade and so on. However, we should all know that all these achievements wouldn’t have been possible without the joint efforts and hard work of all our brothers and sisters at CGC Nigeria Limited, and also the support of all your individual family members. I can sincerely say that there will be no CGC without you all. Seated in this gathering I can see a lot of us who have worked with us for a very long time, like Mr Sunday from operations department headquarters who have served this company since 1990 close to 30 years, please wave your hands and let others see you sir, CGC honours your hard work. Also we have some Chinese here as well who have worked in Nigeria for a long time like; Mr Wu, came here since 2003, I know everybody likes him, please let us see you. There are others also seating here who have worked with us for many years; Mr Peter Balogun of Road and Bridge who has worked with us for 18 years, Mr Samuel Olushola Jacobs of Sinostar, 15 years, our talents in water supply; Mr Friday Okoro 19 years, Mr Tony Okpetu 16 years, Mr Abubakar Dahiru 15 years, Mr John Paul 15 years, our talents in the HQ; Mr Nasiru Ahmed 21 years, Mr Balogun Munir 16 years, Miss Esther Joel Bagudu 14 years. And of course, there are so many other names not mentioned here who have worked really hard for the company as well. Once again, Thanks for your dedication and hard work.
In recent years, due to the competition in the international project becoming increasingly fierce, and coupled with our own needs of achieving enterprise transformation and upgrade, our company, CGCOC will set up a developing strategy -“to build up a comprehensive service platform” for the next coming period. Furthermore, under the above mentioned strategy, CGCOC will fulfil its mission of being “Partnership for Africa’s Development, A Bridge for China-Africa cooperation”, to continue to contribute our strength to deepen the cooperation between China and Africa in an all-round way, to thereby consistently create value for Nigeria social and economic development, and continually adhere to seek the well-being for all of the staff working in our company.
Of course, the achievement of this company cannot be achieved without you, and I also believe that, it is because of the continuous endeavour made by all of you, not only will Nigeria become more prosperous and powerful, but also CGCOC will become more influential, and the future life for everyone will become more affluent and wonderful.
I once came across a quote that reads: ‘’There are three categories of people: The people that make things happen, the people that watch things happen and the people that wonder what happened’’ I plead with you tonight to please be the people that will make good things happen for our company and also for this country. Now let us raise our glasses and make wishes: I wish you and your families’ good health, I wish you all your heart desires and above all; I wish you a Merry Christmas and a Prosperous new year in advance. Cheers!
The company first came to Nigeria in 1983 for a China Assisted borehole projects. With the success recorded in the projects, the Nigerian government on 27th October 1987 via a registered mail a letter sent to China by a Consulting firm named WARDROP Engineering Consultants in Canada with the following words “BY THIS LETTER WE HEREBY NOTIFY YOU ON BEHALF OF SOKOTO AGRICULTURAL AND RURAL DEVELOPMENT AUTHORITY (SARDA) THAT YOUR OFFER OF AUGUST 10, 1987 FOR WORK DESCRIBED IN THE SPECIFICATIONS AND TENDER DOCUMENTS AS BASEMENT CONTRACT HAS BEEN ACCEPTED. WE REQUEST YOU TO SEND A REPRESENTATIVE OF YOUR FIRM TO SOKOTO ON NOVEMBER 10TH 1987 TO SIGN THE CONTRACT …” These few words brought this company to Nigeria 3 decades ago. The said work was divided into two (2) parts between a company named S.C. Lavalin and China Geo-Engineering Corporation. Alhaji Umaru Gwadabawa working with Sokoto Agricultural and Rural Development Authority (SARDA) then facilitated the immigration procedures and personnel were deployed from China. The company drilled a total number of 738 Nos. of boreholes equipped with handpumps between May 1988 to December 1990 with Mr. Liu Zhenduo overseeing the affairs of the company as the General Manager.
In 1990, another contract for the drilling of 150 boreholes was awarded to the company by Directorate for Food Road and Rural Infrastructure (DFRRI). The government stopped the project after 109 boreholes were drilled due to financial constraint on the side of the government.
Around June 1991, the company moved from Sokoto to Kaduna with the award of 560 Rural Water Supply Borehole Project for Kaduna State Agricultural Development Project supervised by Parkman Nigeria Ltd. The company drilled 280 no. boreholes equipped with handpumps.
By December 1992 the company was registered as a limited liability company with Corporate Affairs Commission. The name CGC Nigeria Limited was coined CHINA GEO-ENGINEERING CORPORATION. I remember vividly that during the registration of the company several names were suggested before arriving at the present CGC NIGERIA LIMITED as it is today.
The company started small as a borehole contracting firm. The first Managing Director then (Mr. Tian Chao) was concerned about the expansion of the company from only borehole drilling. Our able Admin Manager (Alhaji Umaru Gwadabawa) did the magic by advising him on ways to diversify. The Managing Director (Mr. Tian Chao) keyed in to bring the full blown CGC Nigeria Limited of today that has grown from a mustard seed to a mighty iroko tree with several birds perching on it.
In 1996 the company was awarded three (3) World Bank Water Projects under NATIONAL WATER REHABILITATION PROJECTS AS FOLLOWS:
REHABILITATION WORKS AT DUKKU WATER TREATMENT WORKS & KEBBI OLD BOREHOLE SYSTEM WITH ACCESS ROAD for Kebbi State Water Board
REHABILITATION WORKS & IMPROVEMENTS TO SOME WATER SUPPLY SYSTEMS IN GEMBU AND TAKUM for Taraba State Water Supply Agency
REHABILITATION WORKS AND IMPROVEMENTS AT THE EXISTING GROUND WATER WORKS OF BA’AP, MABUDI, MANGU AND WASE for Plateau State Water Board
Under the leadership of the second Managing Director (Mr Ji Weimin), the company simultaneously ventured into dam and irrigation projects in the late 1998 with the award of the following contracts:
GARI IRRIGATION SCHEME
SABKE DAM, IRRIGATION AND ACCESS ROAD by the defunct PETROLEUM (SPECIAL) TRUST FUND (PTF).
Venturing into road construction work was not an easy task, but with perseverance the company succeeded. The first road construction project was the DOGON DAWA--HAYIN JARMAN--U/MAJE KAKINI - DINYA - KUYELLO ROAD a 23km road project for Kaduna State Ministry of Works. The project was successfully completed on December 2000.
Precisely 10 years ago i.e. 2008 the company entered into full blown building project with the award of CONSTRUCTION OF A NEW GOMBE TOWNSHIP STADIUM, PANTAMI in Gombe State.
Ladies and gentlemen, all these successes recorded would not have been achieved without our collective efforts. Some people burnt their mid-night candles; some others made unquantifiable sacrifices to bring the company to this lofty height. Many people have come and gone, but you and I are here today alive, hale and hearty. We all can attest to the fact that many notable and reputable local and international companies started operation but have closed due to either lack of proper management or harsh economic condition. CGC Nigeria Ltd despite several challenges has remained in business for the past three (3) decades. It calls for commendation and celebration. I remember two decades ago that at a time the company have to source for loan from bank to make sure salaries and wages are paid as at when due. One thing that we must give kudos to the management for is the prompt payment of salaries and wages. With all my years of service in the company there is no month that ended without salaries and wages not being paid not minding the harsh economic situation in the country.
A lot of changes have taken place since the beginning of the company e.g. affirmative action, Nigerian staff travelling to China, building a state of the art office in Abuja, opening branch companies locally and internationally thereby creating employment etc. It is the desire of the management that very soon more leadership positions will be given to Nigerian staff who has good leadership potentials in line with Nigerian Local Content Policy. We all should see the company as our own by contributing our quota because if the company grows, we all will grow with it and this will in turn positively affect our entire family. To this end, capacity building is a must and all hands must be on deck to see that CGC Nigeria Limited becomes the number one contracting firm in Nigeria. Let us see this company as one big family, like one body. You know that in a family, they have a common goal. Each family member cares for each other. According the Word of God the Bible, “if one part suffers, every part suffers with it; if one part is honored, every part rejoices with it.
Finally my gratitude goes to God who gave me the strength to work for this length of time. I also want to thank the management of CGC, the entire staff and all in attendance. You may not know that you have directly or indirectly in one way or the other imparted my life.
Thanks and God bless you all.
